San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-29-2023

A pair of NL West rivals open up a weekend series south of the border as major league baseball plays regular season games in Mexico City for the first time. The San Francisco Giants are the “road” team as they open a two-game set with the San Diego Padres at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu Saturday evening. San Francisco missed a chance at a four-game home sweep of the Cardinals as they were blanked 6-0 in the series finale Thursday afternoon. San Diego dropped the rubber game of their three-game set on the road against the Cubs as they were beaten 5-2 Thursday afternoon. Last season, the Padres won the season series 13-6, including taking two of three at Petco Park in the most recent series October 3-5, 2022.

San Francisco saw their five-game win streak snapped as they were blanked by the Cardinals in the series finale Thursday afternoon. The Giants went into Friday night’s action 11-14 on the season and stood fourth in the NL West, 2.5 games behind the Diamondbacks for the top spot. On Thursday, San Francisco finished the game with six hits with no player having more than one in the contest. The Giants were zero for seven with runners in scoring position and wasted a solid start by Logan Webb (1-5), who took the loss. He threw 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Sean Manaea is on the mound for the Giants here as he makes his sixth appearance and fourth start of the season. He comes in 0-1 with a 6.61 ERA, a 1.286 WHIP, seven walks and 18 strikeouts over 16.1 innings of work this year. Manaea didn’t factor in the decision in his previous outing, which came in relief against the Cardinals at home Tuesday. He threw 1.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit with no walks and two strikeouts in a game the Giants eventually won 5-4. In his last three starts, Manaea is 0-1 with a 5.54 ERA, a 1.231 WHIP, five walks and 15 strikeouts over 13 innings of work. Manaea makes his fifth career start against the Padres in this contest. He comes in 2-1 with a 3.22 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP, four walks and 19 strikeouts over 22.1 innings of work. In his 165th career major league appearance and 160th start, Manaea pitches at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu for the first time.
