San Francisco Giants vs. Oakland Athletics Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 8-7-2022

The Battle by the Bay wraps up on Sunday afternoon in Oakland as the Giants take on the A's in finale of the two teams' brief two-game weekend series. Both teams came into this series struggling with the A's sporting the worst record in baseball and the Giants plummeting to four-games below .500 after being swept by the Dodgers at home. On the mound on Sunday will be veteran right-hander Logan Webb (9-5, 3.20) of the Giants while the A's have yet to name a starter. Game time is set for 407pm EST.

The Giants season may in fact be on life support following a four-game sweep at the hands of the first-place Dodgers. Heading into Saturday's matchup with Oakland, the Giants were a season-worst four games below .500 and trailed the Dodgers by a whopping 22 games. As far as the wildcard race goes, the Giants are sinking as well, seven games out of one of the three wildcard spots. On Saturday against the lowly A's, Carlos Rodon combined with three relievers to keep the A's at bay and the Giants blasted three home runs on their way to a 7-3 victory. The win snapped a four-game skid for the Giants.

The Giants decided not to part with any key veteran pieces prior to the deadline, a move they may wish to have back. San Francisco has been lifeless since the all-star break, with a 7-13 record since the Midsummer Classic. Their offense has all but disappeared with the team averaging just 3.5 runs per game in the 20 games since the break. Meanwhile, the Giants pitching is giving up nearly a run and a half more per game at 4.8 runs per game allowed since the all-star game. The Giants will turn to their ace, Logan Webb, to help turn their fortunes around on Sunday. Webb leads the Giants in wins, quality starts and innings pitched this season while ranking second in ERA, WHIP, strikeouts and WAR. In the month of July, Webb went 2-2 in six starts with a 2.58 ERA. He was roughed up by the Dodgers in his only start in August, lasting five innings and allowing eight hits and six runs.
