San Francisco Giants vs. Detroit Tigers Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 8-23-2022

The San Francisco Giants travel to Motown on Tuesday to start a quick, two-game series with the Tigers. The Giants are still in the thick of the NL Wildcard race while the Tigers are far removed from playoff contention with over a month to go in the season. The pitching matchup in Tuesday's opener will be left-hander Carlos Rodon (11-6, 2.89) of the Giants taking on righty Drew Hutchison (1-6, 4.23) of the Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm EST.

Despite being a game under .500 at just 60-61 on the season, the Giants are still very much in the NL Wildcard race. Despite losing four out of their last five games, the Giants are still just six games back in the wildcard standings. The Giants will have to start winning series more consistently and a sweep of this two-game series would be a good start. The Giants did avoid a sweep against the lowly Rockies on Sunday with a 9-8 win in 11-innings.

Consistency has escaped the Giants one year after the team set a franchise record for wins in a season. After winning five-straight games, the Giants lost four in a row before the win on Sunday. The team's pitching staff has struggled mightily, particularly the Giants bullpen. The Giants have the 6th worst ERA in baseball this season after having one of the deepest and most consistent pens in 2021. The Giants starting staff is slightly above average, ranked 13th in quality starts in baseball. On the mound on Tuesday night will be lefty Carlos Rodon. Rodon leads the team in strikeouts, is tied for the team lead in wins and is second in quality starts and innings. Rodon has been solid in his last five starts with a 3-1 record and an ERA of 2.67. He has allowed just 18 hits in 30.1 innings with 41 strikeouts.
