The San Diego State Aztecs are off to another solid start and on their way to another NCAA Tournament appearance with a record of 16-4 on the season. The Aztecs' shooting was sizzling in the second half against Wyoming last Tuesday on their way to an 81-65 home win. San Diego State shot 67% from the floor in the second half to pull away from the Cowboys to pick up their fifth MWC win in seven games. Lamont Butler led the way with 23 points for the Aztecs.
“These guys are veterans. You don't have to say a whole lot at halftime,” said Head Coach Brian Dutcher following the win. “We just give them a few adjustments. There's no rah-rah pep talk, they're ready to go. They play hard. They know they play the right way. The ball started going, and Darrion Trammell came in and was dynamic offensively. Lamont tied a career-high tonight with 23 points. These guys are hard to guard. They're very good players, so it's not for me to motivate them, it's for me to put them in positions to be successful. If they're frustrated with me, it's usually because I don't put them in enough situations where they can play their games. That's on me to try to put them in more situations where they can be dangerous.”
The Aztecs have now won two of three games in conference play and hope to make it three of four when they visit the Rams. The Aztecs come in with the 105th-ranked offense in the nation. They are 141st in field goal percentage and 271st in 3-point shooting. The Aztecs have been much better on the defensive end this season. They are 137th in scoring defense thus far. The Aztecs are an impressive 53rd in the country in field goal defense and 21st in 3-point defense. On the glass, they are 109th in the nation in total rebounds per game. They are 70th in the country in turnovers per game as well.
