San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 8-31-2022

San Diego will wrap up its three-game series in San Francisco on Wednesday afternoon. The Padres got off to a nice start in the series, picking up a 6-5 win on Monday night. This story was published prior to Tuesday night’s contest.

San Diego has not had the season that it was hoping for up to this point, but the Padres still have an opportunity to make the playoffs and see what happens from there. They have had an extremely average month of August, going 14-13 through their first 27 games. San Diego lost two consecutive games at home against Cleveland early last week before bouncing back with a series win in Kansas City. The Padres built on that momentum with Monday’s win over San Francisco. They are playing in the most lopsided division in the majors, as the Dodgers hold a 19.5-game lead atop the standings. San Diego is 1.5 games ahead of Milwaukee for the final National League Wild Card spot.

The Padres have been a decent offensive team, ranked No. 16 in batting average (.242). Third baseman Manny Machado leads the way with 139 hits, including 24 home runs. Right fielder Juan Soto and first baseman Josh Bell have combined for five homers since being acquired from Washington. They are facing a San Francisco pitching staff that is No. 19 with an ERA of 4.00. Right-handed pitcher Joe Musgrove is going to be on the mound for San Diego on Wednesday. He allowed five runs (two earned) on eight hits and one walk across just 3.2 innings against Kansas City last Friday. Musgrove had posted three straight quality starts prior to that outing, and he maintains a solid 2.96 ERA this season.
