San Diego took their final two games as they claimed their series from the Mets at home and won five of their last six games heading into the All-Star break. The Padres entered Friday 43-47 and stood fourth in the NL West, 8.5 games behind the Dodgers and Diamondbacks for the top spot in the division. They were six games behind the Giants for the final wild card spot in the National League. On Sunday, San Diego got two hits each from Ha-Seong Kim (run), Fernando Tatis Jr. (two runs) and Manny Machado (two runs, five RBI) to lead the offense. Machado hit his 14th and 15th homers of the season for the Padres in the contest. Joe Musgrove (8-2) earned the win as he threw six innings, allowing no runs on three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts, before turning things over to the bullpen.

The Padres are expected to recall Ryan Weathers from Triple-A El Paso to make his 12th appearance and 10th start of the season in this contest. He is 1-5 with a 6.08 ERA, a 1.60 WHIP, 15 walks and 27 strikeouts over 40 innings of work this season in the majors. Weathers took the loss in his last start in the majors, which came against Cleveland at home back on June 15. He threw just 1.2 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts in a game the Padres dropped 8-6. In his last three starts, Weathers is 0-2 with a 15.63 ERA, a 2.84 WHIP, one walk and five strikeouts over 6.1 innings of work. Weathers took the loss in his lone appearance against the Phillies, which came in relief at home on August 22, 2021. He threw two innings, allowing three runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts in a 7-4 Padres defeat. In his 43rd career major league appearance and 29th start, Weathers pitches at Citizens Bank Park for the first time here. Over six starts with Triple-A El Paso of the Pacific Coast League, he is 0-2 with a 4.03 ERA, a 1.517 WHIP, 18 walks and 38 strikeouts over 29 innings this season.
