San Diego Padres vs. Miami Marlins Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 8-16-2022

The San Diego Padres and Miami Marlins will continue a three-game series on Tuesday night at loanDepot Park. Miami took Monday's series opener by a 3-0 final to cash in as a +134 underdog. San Diego is holding on to a Wild Card spot at 65-53, while the Marlins are out of contention at 51-65.

These teams met in San Diego back in early May, with the Padres taking three of four.

With recent news that superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. will miss the rest of the season due to a PED suspension, the Padres will have to get offense from other sources, but none was provided in a tough loss Monday. San Diego managed just five hits in the loss, going 0-2 with runners in scoring position.

Joe Musgrove took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out five across six innings. Manny Machado went 2-4 in a standout performance for an offense that failed to record an extra-base hit.

The Padres are only up very slightly on the money line for the season while going 55-63 on the run line. Overs are 54-60-4 for the Padres, with each of their last three games going under the betting total.

San Diego's offense is in the middle of the pack at 4.48 runs per game on a .702 team OPS, although it made massive additions at th e trade deadline. Pitching has been more of a strength as the Padres rank inside the top 10 at a 3.77 ERA including a mark of 3.80 out of the bullpen.

One of those additions was the great Juan Soto, who is having another unreal season at the plate with a .908 OPS, 22 homers and 71 runs scored. Machado is also one of baseball's best players at 5.3 WAR on an .895 OPS, 21 homers, 70 RBI and 75 runs scored.

Sean Manaea will be on the mound for the 22nd time, hoping to get a down year turned around as he's 6-6 with a 4.76 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 119 innings. The 30-year-0ld went five innings against the San Diego Padres  last Wednesday, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out four.

Outfielder Matt Beaty (shoulder impingement) is the only San Diego position player on the IL. The bullpen is missing Austin Adams (flexor tendon surgery), Pierce Johnson (elbow tendinitis), Drew Pomeranz (flexor tendon surgery), Crag Stammen (shoulder inflammation) and Taylor Scott (finger laceration).
