San Diego saw their three-game win streak snapped as they were beaten in the opening game of this series Monday night. The Padres entered Tuesday 52-55 and stood fourth in the NL West, 8.5 games behind the Dodgers for the top spot. They were five games behind the Marlins, Diamondbacks and Brewers, who were tied for the final wild card spot in the National League. On Monday night, San Diego got three hits from Juan Soto (run) and Matthew Batten (RBI) while Jake Cronenworth (run, RBI) added two. Trent Grisham hit his 11th homer of the season in a losing effort for the Padres. Seth Lugo didn’t factor in the decision as he threw seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. Nick Martinez (4-4) took the loss as he threw one inning, allowing one run (none earned) on no hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Joe Musgrove takes the hill f or the Padres as he makes his 18th start of the season after starting the year on the injured list. He is 10-3 with a 3.05 ERA, a 1.331 WHIP, 13 walks and 42 strikeouts over 41.1 innings of work on the year. Musgrove earned the win in his last start, which came at home against Texas Friday. He threw six innings, allowing no runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts in a game the Padres eventually won 7-1. In his last three starts, Musgrove is 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, four walks and 18 strikeouts over 18 innings of work. Musgrove makes his ninth career start against the Rockies in this contest. He is 4-3 with a 3.06 ERA, a 1.064 WHIP, seven walks and 53 strikeouts over 47 innings of work against them.
