The opening week of the 2023-24 NBA season wraps up Sunday, October 29, with the San Antonio Spurs taking on the Los Angeles Clippers in the Western Conference showdown at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, with the tip-off at 8:00 PM ET.
The Clippers aim for their fifth straight victory over the Spurs after sweeping last season’s four-game series. Los Angeles is a 9-point home fave, and the totals are listed at 228.5 points.
The San Antonio Spurs opened their 2023-24 campaign with a two-game homestand. After a 126-119 defeat to the Dallas Mavericks, the Spurs outlasted the Houston Rockets 126-122 in overtime. Last Friday, the Spurs rallied from a double-digit third-quarter deficit to force overtime and grab their first victory in the Victor Wembanyama era.
The No. 1 pick from the 2023 NBA Draft posted a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double against the Rockets. Wembanyama also had three blocks, three steals, and an assist, while Devin Vassell added 25 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field and 8-for-11 from the free-throw line. The Spurs shot 48.9% from the field and 31.0% from downtown (13-for-42) while tallying a 32/18 assist-to-turnover ratio.
“I really, really love winning,” Wemba nyama said. “It’s what I love most in life. So, of course, it felt great. Coming back in the locker room, coach Gregg Popovich acknowledged that it was my first-ever NBA win. It just made me proud for a moment, proud of myself. Of course, it’s just one win and we’ve got a whole lot more to come and a whole lot more tough games to come.”
Wembanyama had 15 points and five rebounds in his NBA debut, and the Spurs fought bravely in a seven-point loss to the Mavericks. Vassell led the way for San Antonio with 23 points, Keldon Johnson posted a line of 17 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, and Tre Jones had 16 points and six assists. The Spurs handed out 33 assists but committed 19 turnovers and were outscored 56-46 in the paint.
