The Yankees were once surging far ahead of the pack in the American League. But although they remain among the top contenders by the World Series odds, the Bronx Bombers have since stumbled.

They halted a four-game losing skid on Saturday with a resounding 14-4 win over the Boston Red Sox. However, the Yankees are a mediocre 15-17 since the beginning of June. And more recently, they've lost 12 of their last 17 games.

Now they're left hoping young hurler Luis Gil can return to his earlier form in prime time on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball against the rivaled Red Sox, and maintain his perch atop the MLB Rookie of the Year odds in the AL.

There's no doubting Luis Gil's talent, and particularly a lethal slider that's used sparingly but effectively.

The problem seems to be that lately there's perhaps enough for the opposition to study, and Gil has yet to adjust to how batters are now approaching him.

Leaning on trends too heavily can be dangerous, but Gil's recent trajectory is too alarming to ignore. He was shining throughout the early months of the season, and especially during May. The righty produced a bonkers 0.70 ERA during that month while allowing just three earned runs across 32 2/3 innings. That sparkling run included a 14-strikeout performance over eight innings against the Chicago White Sox.

However, a dramatically different pitcher has been emerging since early June. He's getting repeatedly shelled while coughing up 21 earned runs over his last five outings and 20 1/3 innings. That's a dark place to be for a pitcher in his first full season, and now Gil will need to tame a Boston offense that's tied for seventh leaguewide in OPS.

Crawford does indeed ride a cutter to much of his success while throwing it 30.8% of the time. That sets up his four-seamer well, and the run value of that pitch from him ranks in the 84th percentile of MLB, according to Baseball Savant.

His cutter is behind much of the right-hander's strikeout prowess too, with Crawford sitting at 9.3 K/9. However, even though Crawford is rolling punchout wise with seven-plus strikeouts in four straight starts (including nine on June 16 against the Yankees), it will likely be tough for him to keep that going on Sunday.

Some of the most prominent Yankees sluggers thrive against a cutter, with Aaron Judge hitting .455, Anthony Volpe at .294, and Juan Soto slugging .529. The Yankees al so don't strike out much overall while sitting 19th leaguewide.
