Princeton vs. Creighton Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 3-24-2023

It’s the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and it brings us a matchup in the South Region when a member of the Ivy League battles one from the Big East with a spot in the Elite Eight on the line. The 15th-seeded Princeton Tigers look to continue their magical run as they face the sixth-seeded Creighton Bluejays Friday night in Louisville. Princeton advanced to the Sweet 16 by running past seventh-seeded Missouri 78-63 Saturday, winning outright as a 10-point underdog. Creighton upended third-seeded Baylor 85-76 in their second-round matchup Sunday, covering the line as a 1.5-point favorite. The teams have met just once in their respective histories as Division I foes with the Bluejays winning 63-54 at home back on December 29, 1961.

Princeton entered the tournament as a 15 seed but they followed the path blazed by Saint Peter’s a season ago as they dispatched second-seeded Arizona and seventh-seeded Missouri to get here. The Tigers enter the game 23-8 overall and were 10-4 in the Ivy League during the regular season. Against Missouri, Princeton led by as many as 14 in the first half before giving up a 7-0 run over the final 3:02 to trim their lead to seven at intermission. The Tigers saw the lead trimmed to five early in the second half before going on a 7-0 run to take a 40-28 lead with 17:20 to play. Princeton never let their lead drop below six the rest of the way while leading by as many as 21. The Tigers shot 43.5% from the field, including 12 of 33 from three-point range, and won the rebounding battle 44-30. Ryan Langborg led Princeton with 22 points, six rebounds and four assists in the win.

On the year, Princeton is 87th in the nation in scoring offense with 75.5 points per game. The Tigers are pulling down 39.4 boards per contest, which is ninth in the country, while they dish out an average of 13.5 assists a night. Princeton stands a solid 116th in scoring defense by giving up an average of 67.9 points per game. Tosan Evbuomwan leads the Tigers as he puts up 14.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists a night on the year. Ryan Langborg (12.3 points) and Matt Allocco (10.8 points, 4.8 rebounds) each average in double figures as well. Caden Pierce, Keeshawn Kellman, Blake Peters, Deven Austin, Xavian Lee, Zach Martini and Jack Scott are all key rotation players for coach Mitch Henderson. Princeton shoots 45.5% from the field as a team on the season. The Tigers are drilling 8.5 three-pointers a night while connecting on 33.9% of their attempts from beyond the arc. Princeton is average at the charity stripe as they have converted 71.4% of their attempts at the line this se ason.
