The Portland Trailblazers are on a new path now that the team has parted ways with the face of the team, Dame Lillard, and turned to a rebuild with several new faces. The Blazers added veteran Malcolm Brogdon, last year's Sixth Man of the Year with Boston, who has given the team some veteran leadership and leads them in scoring and assists to start the year. They have also added two young big men, one that should be a key scorer and the other that will patrol the paint, in Deandre Ayton and Robert Williams III as part of two separate trades around the Lillard deal. Finally, the Blazers have a young rookie in Scoot Henderson that they hope will be the face of the franchise for years to come. Things have started slowly for the Blazers, losing each of their first three games including game one of this Eastern Conference swing to the Sixers in Philadelphia. Patience is the name of the game in Portland and head coach Chauncey Billups is awar e of that, especially with his rookie.

“One of the main things I told him was, ‘I’m going to be for you what I needed at this age,’ ” Billups told Andscape. “I needed somebody that knew what I should be doing. I needed somebody that could help me learn the game. I didn’t have that. Somebody that was going to be patient with me, knowing that there’s going to be some nasty, ugly games. Someone that was going to be patient, that understood it. I didn’t have that.

“I told him, ‘I’m going to be what I needed as the third pick in the draft at 20 years old. I’m going to be that guy for you.’ I promised him that. And that’s exactly what I’m going to be the whole time. I’m always going to be consistent.”

The Blazers will certainly have some issues this season in adjusting their off ense that no longer includes a dynamic talent like Lillard. Last season, the Blazers averaged 113.4 points per game and were in the top half of the league in scoring. Thus far, the Blazers are barely averaging over 100 points in a small sample but it is a concern. Ayton's ability to score without Paul feeding him will be something to look for this season. The Blazers were 11th in the NBA in 3-point shooting last year at 36.5%. They are shooting just 29.7% from 3pt range to start the season and the recent loss of Anfernee Simons to a thumb injury for over a month will greatly impact the team's offensive output. Last season, the Blazers average 51.5 rebounds per game and have started slowly in that department as well at just 43.5 rebounds per game thus far. Ayton averaged nearly 10 rebounds per game last season with Phoenix but he and Williams are not prototypical rebounding bigs.

Key Injuries: Anfernee Simons (thumb) out.
