College football action on Saturday afternoon, and we will see The Pittsburgh Panthers pay a visit to Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana, to grapple with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Panthers enter this contest at 2-5 on the year and are off a tough 21-17 loss to Wake Forest on the road. The Irish come in off a Bye week and prior to that, they crushed USC by a score of 48-20 to move to 6-2 on the year.
The Pittsburgh Panthers are not having a great year despite being picked by many to finish 3rd in the ACC this year. Pitt had 12 starters back from a team that went 9-4 a year ago, but they have just struggled getting started this year. They began the year with a 45-7 over Wofford before losing their next four games. Pitt then beat Louisville by 17 at home, which was a shocker as they were 7-point dogs in the contest. Pitt tried to make it two in a row last week, but they came up a bit short in a 21-17 loss. The Panthers had a 17-14 lead late, but Wake scored with just seven seconds left to win the game. Pitt did outgain the Deamon Deacons 414-323 and won the turnover battle 2-0, but it just wasn't enough.
The offense has been a big issue for the Panthers this year as they are ranked 115th in total yards, 113th in rushing, and 93rd in passing while putting up just 21.7 ppg against FBS foes . Phil Jurkovec started at QB this year, but he has struggled, so Christian Veilleux has taken over. he has thrown for 502 yards with 4 TDs and no INTs over his last two games. Veilleux will have a tough go of it against this strong Notre Dame secondary. The defense brought back just five starters this year and it has played well for the most part, ranking 26th in total yards allowed, 52nd against the run, and 27th against the pass, but they have allowed 27.5 ppg in their six games against FBS foes. The defense will be tested against a good Notre Dame offense.
