Pittsburgh vs. North Carolina (UNC) Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 2-1-2023

It’s an ACC matchup as a pair of teams take the floor in search of a victory on Tobacco Road. The Pitt Panthers are on the road as they make the trip to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels Wednesday night. Pitt rallied to earn a 71-68 home win over #20 Miami in their previous game Saturday afternoon, winning outright as a 1.5-point underdog. North Carolina slipped past Syracuse 72-68 on the road last Tuesday in their previous contest though they failed to cover the line as a 4.5-point favorite. In the all-time series between the teams, the Tar Heels own a 15-6 advantage but it was the Panthers taking two straight and four of the last five matchups. That includes a 76-74 home win in the first matchup this season on December 30, 2022.

Pitt has won two straight and four of five as they took down #20 Miami in a game that saw them rally late to earn the win. The Panthers improved to 15-7 overall and stand third in the conference with an 8-3 mark, leaving them two games behind Clemson for the top spot. Against Miami, Pitt led 5-0 three minutes into the game only to trail by as many as 11 in the first half before climbing within five at the half. The Panthers trailed by 11 with 12:13 to play and were down 68-60 with 2:28 remaining before closing the game on an 11-0 run to secure the win. Pitt shot 40% from the field, including nine of 22 from three-point range, and won the rebounding battle 39-30 in the contest. Blake Hinson led the Panthers with 21 points and eight rebounds in the win.

The Panthers average 74.3 points per game on the season, putting them 128th in the nation in scoring offense. Pitt pulls down an average of 37.4 rebounds per contest while dishing out 14.3 assists a night. The Panthers are slightly above average on the defensive end of the floor, ranking 147th in the country by allowing 68.2 points a contest. Blake Hinson leads Pitt offensively as he contributes 16.4 points plus 6.5 rebounds per contest. Jamarius Burton (16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists) and John Hugley IV (eight points, 3.6 boards) are solid secondary scoring options. Greg Elliott (11 points, 4.4 boards), Nelly Cummings (10.2 points, 4.4 assists), Nike Sibande, Jorge Diaz Graham, Federiko Federiko, Nate Santos and Guillermo Diaz Graham have to step up for coach Jeff Capel and the Panthers to have success. Pitt is shooting 44.6% from the floor as a team. The Panthers hit 9.1 three-pointers a game and knock down 35% of their attempts from beyond the arc. Pitt is an excellent team at the free throw line as they convert 75.4% of their chances at the stripe this year.

Hugley IV left the program on January 14 and is seeking a redshirt year, citing a knee injury and his mental health as reasons for his departure.
