It’s an interconference battle on the gridiron between teams with identical records but different situations in relation to the playoff picture down in the Tar Heel State. The Pittsburgh Steelers are on the road as they make the trip to face the Carolina Panthers Sunday afternoon. Pittsburgh comes in off a 16-14 home loss to Baltimore in their previous contest last Sunday, losing outright as a 1.5-point favorite. Carolina defeated Seattle 30-24 on the road last Sunday, winning outright as a 3.5-point underdog. In the all-time regular season series between the teams, the Steelers own a commanding 6-1 advantage, including a 52-21 home demolition in the most recent matchup on November 8, 2018.

Pittsburgh had won two straight and three of four before getting upended by Baltimore in a typical AFC North clash where points came at a premium. The Steelers fell to 5-8 on the season with the loss and sit tied for third in the AFC North race. Against Baltimore, Pittsburgh was down 10-0 in the first quarter and never got even again. The Steelers were within 10-7 after one quarter: the score was 13-7 at the half, after three quarters and remained that way until Justin Tucker kicked a field goal with 3:19 to play. Pittsburgh went down the field to score a touchdown, drawing within two, with 2:30 to play. They were unable to get a stop on the ensuing Baltimore drive as the Ravens ran out the clock. The Steelers held a 329-309 edge in total offense and picked up 23 first downs while allowing 18 though they lost time of possession by a 32:59 to 27:01 margin. Pittsburgh was undone by three turnovers, including a pair of red zone picks, while fa iling to record a takeaway.

The Steelers are 24th in the league in passing offense as they average 204.3 yards per game through the air. The team is 19th in the league in rushing offense as they put up an average of 113 yards per contest. Pittsburgh is 27th in the league in scoring offense with 17.5 points per contest and 14th in scoring defense as they allow 22.5 points per game. Mitch Trubisky is 100 of 158 passing for 1,073 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions while getting sacked 10 times. He adds 29 yards and a score on the ground. Kenny Pickett is 191 of 294 passing for 1,797 yards with four touchdowns and eight interceptions on the year. He contributes 225 yards and three scores on the ground. Najee Harris leads the team on the ground with 187 carries for 704 yards plus five scores. Jaylen Warren (42 carries, 206 yards) and Benny Snell Jr. (20 carries, 90 yards) have seen action in the ground game as well. Diontae Johnson leads the team in receptions with 67 receptions totaling 647 yards on the season. George Pickens (40 catches, 590 yards, two TD), Pat Freiermuth (53 grabs, 630 yards, two TD), the departed Chase Claypool (32 catches, 311 yards, TD) and Harris (32 receptions, 165 yards, two TD) have been active as well. Chris Boswell has hit all 11 extra point attempts and 12 of 17 field goal attempts this season with a long of 59 on the year. Matthew Wright hit all seven extra points and 12 of 14 field goals with a long of 52 while Nick Sciba was one of one on extra points and two of two on field goals with a long of 38.

On the injury front, the Steelers saw Pickett (concussion protocol) and corner Cam Sutton (stinger/neck) were limited in practice Wednesday. Harris (hip), Freiermuth (foot), linebacker Myles Jack (groin) and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi (toe) all did not practice. Watch for updates on their statuses as the week p rogresses.
