Steel City Beginnings: The Foundry Years (1933-1969) 

The Pittsburgh Steelers were founded in 1933 by Arthur Joseph Rooney, known as Art Rooney Sr. Forged in the industrial heart of America, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the team originally bore the name “Pirates,” after the city’s baseball team. However, it wasn’t until 1940 that the franchise adopted the now-iconic “Steelers” moniker, paying homage to the steel industry that defined Pittsburgh.
