Pittsburgh Pirates vs. San Francisco Giants Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 5-30-2023

The Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Francisco Giants will continue their three-game series in San Francisco on Tuesday night. The Pirates have cooled off since a hot start had them at the top of the NL Central Division but are still just behind the Milwaukee Brewers. The Giants, meanwhile, got off to a slow start this season but have played their best baseball over the past two weeks to get over .500. The pitching matchup on Tuesday night will feature Pirates' righty Johan Oviedo (3-4, 4.70) taking on an opener for the Giants. While the opening pitcher has yet to be announced, expect SF manager Gabe Kapler to employ lefty Sean Manaea (2-2, 6.61) for the bulk of the innings in this one. The first pitch is scheduled for 9:45 PM EST.

The Pirates have cooled considerably since a quick start propelled them into first place in the NL Central Division. Pittsburgh lost two of three over the weekend in Seattle to start this west coast swing. The Pirates have now gone just 6-17 in the month of May heading into Monday afternoon's game in San Francisco. On Monday afternoon, the Pirates were pounded by the Giants 14-4. Pirates' pitching gave up 18 hits on the day and allowed the Giants to score five runs in the 2nd inning and eight runs in the seventh.

The Pirates will send righty Johan Oviedo to the hill on Tuesday night. Oviedo is 3-4 in ten starts this season including four quality starts. He has an ERA of 4.70 and a K/9 rate of 8.0. On the road this season, Oviedo is 1-2 in five starts with an ERA of 5.04. He has allowed 28 hits in 25 innings on the road and his K/9 rate is slightly higher at 8.6. He comes off a solid performance against the Texas Rangers at home, going 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on six hits.
