The Pittsburgh Penguins (39-30-10 SU, 5th in Metropolitan Division) make the trip to Michigan take on the Detroit Red Wings (35-33-10 SU, 7th in Atlantic Division) on Saturday at the Little Caesars Arena.

The Red Wings have won two of the past three games versus the Penguins, including a 7-4 victory at home in March.  Left Winger David Perron had a third-period hat trick and Dylan Larkin chipped in with a goal and two assists for Detroit in the win. The Penguins outshot the Red Wings 39-25 on the night.  Each team scored twice on the power play, but Pittsburgh squandered four of their six chances while Detroit took advantage of two of their three opportunities. Four different skaters scored for the Penguins.

The Penguins have played .500 hockey since March 20 and they have lost three straight games on the road.  They have a 16-18-5 record away from their home arena this season. The Red Wings have lost two of their last four games overall and are 2-1 in their previous three games at home.  Detroit currently has a 19-15-5 record at the Little Caesars Arena.

The Penguins have won two of their last three games, including a 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild (44-24-10, 3rd in Central Division) on Thursday evening.  The win helped the Penguins keep pace in the hunt for the Eastern Conference’s last two wild-card playoff spots. They are currently one game behind Florida and the Islanders in the wild card chase.  Goalie Tristan Jarry turned away all but one of the Wild’s 28 shots on net and right winger Rickard Rakell had a goal and a assist for Pittsburgh to secure the win.  Both teams scored on power plays.  The Penguins blocked 23 Wild shots and had 11 takeaways on the night.

Pittsburgh’s offense ranks 17th in goals per game (3.2) and 25th in shooting percentage (9.2%).  The defense ranks 21st in goals allowed per game (3.2) and 14th in save percentage (90.1%).

No injuries have been reported by the Penguins.
