It’s an interconference matchup between a team in the mix in their respective playoff picture and one that is a doormat in the nation’s capital. The Phoenix Suns are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Washington Wizards Sunday afternoon. Phoenix comes in off a 129-120 road loss in their previous game against the Hawks in Hotlanta, losing outright as a 3.5-point favorite Friday night. Washington was beaten 110-102 at home by Miami Friday night in their previous contest, failing to cover the line as a 7.5-point underdog. In the all-time regular season series between the teams, the Wizards own a 69-67 advantage though the Suns took a 112-108 home win in the most recent matchup on December 17, 2023.

Phoenix saw their two-game win streak snapped as they were knocked off by the Hawks on the road in their previous contest Friday night. The Suns fell to 28-21 on the season and stood third in the Pacific Division, five games behind the Clippers for the top spot. They held the final guaranteed playoff spot in the Western Conference, though they were tied with New Orleans, and stood 4.5 games ahead of the Rockets to remain in the playoff field. Against Atlanta, Phoenix trailed by three after the opening quarter and by as many as 10 in the second quarter before cutting the margin back to three at the half. The Suns led by two with 1:19 to play in the third quarter but gave up seven straight points to trail by five after three quarters. Phoenix couldn’t get closer than that the rest of the way as they took the loss. The Suns shot 53.4% from the field, including 14 of 37 from three-point range, but allowed Atlanta to shoot 51.6% while tur ning the ball over 16 times in the game. Kevin Durant led the Suns with 35 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the loss.

The Suns enter this contest 12th in the league in scoring offense as they average 116.9 points per game on the year. Phoenix stands 19th in rebounding with an average of 43.2 boards per contest while they are 14th by dishing out an average of 26.6 assists per contest. The Suns are 15th in the league in scoring defense as they allow an average of 114.7 points per game this season. Devin Booker is second on the team with 28.2 points plus 7.2 assists per game this season. Kevin Durant (28.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.8 assists), Bradley Beal (17.1 points), Eric Gordon (12.6 points) and Grayson Allen (13.2 points, 4.1 rebounds) are good offensive weapons. Jusuf Nurkic (11.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists), Josh Okogie, Keita Bates-Diop, Jordan Goodwin, Drew Eubanks, Yuta Watanabe and Nassir Little are solid contributors in the rotation. Phoenix is 5th in field goal percentage by shooting 49.5% from the floor as a team on the year. The Suns are 21st as they knock down an average of 12 three-pointers a night while the team is 6th as they splash 37.9% of their attempts from beyond the arc this season.

Damion Lee (knee) was injured during training camp and remains without a timetable for return as he works his way back.
