Phoenix Suns vs. San Antonio Spurs Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 1-28-2023

Once Upon A Time In Las Vegas – Championship Sunday

It’s a battle of Western Conference teams on the hardwood in the Lone Star State looking to pick up a victory. The Phoenix Suns are on the road as they make the trip to take on the San Antonio Spurs Saturday night. Phoenix was edged 99-95 at home by Dallas Thursday night, losing outright as a one-point favorite in their previous contest. San Antonio was blown out 138-100 on the road by the Clippers Thursday night, failing to cover the line as a 13-point underdog. In the all-time regular season series between the teams, the Spurs own a 99-85 advantage but the Suns have won seven straight meetings. That includes a 133-95 road win in the first meeting between the teams this season on December 4, 2022.

Phoenix saw their four-game win streak snapped as they were taken down by the Mavericks at home Thursday night in their previous contest. The Suns enter this game 25-25 and stand tied for third in the Pacific Division, 3.5 games behind the Kings for the top spot. They are 7th in the West, 9.5 games behind the Nuggets for the top spot: in addition, they were one game behind Dallas for the final guaranteed playoff spot and one game ahead of the 11th-place Thunder to remain in the play-in tournament. Against the Mavericks, the game was tied after the opening quarter, trailed by six at the half and by as many as 11 in the third quarter. After cutting the deficit to seven after three quarters, they were down nine with 3:34 remaining in regulation only to cut the margin to 96-95 with 19.1 seconds remaining. That was as close as the Suns would get as they went down in defeat. Phoenix shot 40.7% from the floor, including 13 of 32 from three-point range, and won the rebounding battle 50-43 in the game. Cameron Johnson (eight rebounds) and Chris Paul (10 assists) each had 22 points in the loss.

The Suns enter this contest 24th in the league in scoring offense as they average 112.6 points per game on the year. Phoenix stands 14th in rebounding with an average of 43.7 boards per contest while they are 5th by dishing out an average of 26.9 assists per contest. The Suns are 5th in the league in scoring defense as they allow an average of 111.4 points per game this season. Devin Booker leads the team with 27.1 points plus 5.6 assists per game this season. Cameron Johnson (14.8 points), Mikal Bridges (16.4 points, 4.4 rebounds), Chris Paul (13.7 points, 8.6 assists), Deandre Ayton (17.5 points, 10.1 rebounds) and Cameron Payne (12.1 points, 5.3 assists) are good offensive weapons. Jock Landale, Landry Shamet, Torrey Craig, Dami on Lee, Bismack Biyombo, Duane Washington Jr., Dario Saric and Josh Okogie are solid contributors in the rotation. Phoenix is 22nd in field goal percentage by shooting 46.2% from the floor as a team on the year. The Suns are 8th as they knock down an average of 13 three-pointers a night while the team is 3rd as they splash 38.8% of their attempts from beyond the arc this season.

Payne (foot) has been out since December 13 with no clear timetable to return to action. Booker (groin) missed three games, played four minutes on Christmas against the Nuggets and has been out since: he is expected to miss at least four weeks, putting his earliest return as early February. Shamet (foot) has missed the last five games, last taking the floor on January 16. Watch for further updates on these injury situations.
