Philadelphia suffered their third straight loss as they ended up falling short in the opening game of this series Friday night, snapping their 12-game interleague win streak in the process. The Phillies entered Saturday tied for second in the NL East with a 52-45 mark, 11.5 games behind the Braves for the top spot in the division. They were part of a three-team tie for the final wild-card spot in the National League with the Reds and Marlins. On Friday night, Philadelphia got two hits each from Bryson Stott (two runs, RBI) and Alec Bohm only to fall a run short. Stott (his ninth) and J.T. Realmuto (his 12th) each homered in the loss for the Phillies, who went one for six with runners in scoring position in the game. Ranger Suarez (2-5) took the loss as he went five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Aaron Nola is on the mound for the Phillies as he logs his 21st start of the year in this one. He comes in 9-6 with a 4.27 ERA, a 1.077 WHIP, 30 walks and 126 strikeouts over 126.1 innings of work on the year. Nola earned the win in his last start, which came against the Brewers on the road Tuesday. He threw 7.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts in a game the Phillies won 4-3. In his last three starts, Nola is 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP, one walk and 24 strikeouts over 20.2 innings of work. Nola, in his 224th career major league start, pitches against the Guardians for the first time here. As a result, this marks the first time that he pitches at Progressive Field as well.
