The Patriots, who selected QB Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, beat the Carolina Panthers 17-3 in their preseason opener Aug. 8. QB Bailey Zappe, who appeared in 10 games last season, had a team-high 108 passing yards on 12-of-20 passing. New England allowed just 124 passing yards but also played virtually no Panthers starters. It should see a bit more competitive action in Week 2.

QB Kenny Pickett, who was the starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, went 14 for 22 and ended with 89 passing yards and a touchdown. The Eagles also had a stout defense, allowing a total of just 99 passing yards to Baltimore’s backup quarterbacks. Philadelphia 1st-round pick CB Quinyon Mitchell played some, but didn’t record a tackle.
