It’s a tilt on the college hardwood as a team from the West Coast Conference makes the cross-country trek to take on a team from the ACC in the Bluegrass State. The Pepperdine Waves are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Louisville Cardinals Sunday afternoon. Pepperdine took down UC San Diego 68-62 at home in their previous contest December 9, covering the line as a five-point favorite. Louisville was dropped 75-63 by Arkansas State at home in their previous contest Wednesday night, losing outright as a 3.5-point favorite. This marks the first time that the two programs have met as Division I opponents in their respective histories.

Pepperdine took down UC San Diego at home to snap a two-game skid and a run where they had dropped six of seven in their previous contest. The Waves improved to 5-7 on the season and have yet to take the floor in WCC action this season. Against UC San Diego, Pepperdine trailed by 10 just over seven minutes into the game before rallying to cut the margin to three at the half. The Waves took the lead for good with an 8-2 run in the second half to take a 42-38 lead and didn’t let the Tritons closer than two the rest of the way. Pepperdine shot 44.8% from the field, including six of 14 from three-point range, and forced 15 turnovers to offset losing the rebounding battle 38-29. Houston Mallette led the Waves with 19 points and four assists in the win.

The Waves are averaging 72.1 points per game (249th in the nation) so far this season. Pepperdine pulls down 33.6 rebounds per contest w hile they dish out 13.8 assists per game. The Waves are slightly below average on the defensive end of the floor, ranking 205th in the nation as they give up an average of 71.8 points per game on the year. Houston Mallette leads Pepperdine as he averages 18 points per game on the year. Michael Ajayi (17.4 points, 10 rebounds) and Malik Moore (9.1 points) are capable secondary scorers. Boubacar Coulibaly (10 points, five boards), Ethan Anderson, Jalen Pitre, Nils Cooper, Cord Stanberry, Aladji Gassama and Curtis Williams are solid role players for coach Lorenzo Romar. Pepperdine shoots 45.3% from the floor as a team on the year. The Waves are hitting 6.3 three-pointers a game as they shoot 36.9% from beyond the arc. Pepperdine is below average this season at the stripe, posting a 69.8% mark at the free throw line.
