Penn State will try to recover from its most disastrous loss of the season when it travels to Northwestern on Wednesday night. The Nittany Lions had used a three-game winning streak to get themselves back into the NCAA Tournament picture, but they fell right onto the wrong side of the bubble with their loss to Rutgers on Sunday. Northwestern dropped out of the top 25 with a pair of road losses last week.
Penn State had worked its way back into the thick of the NCAA Tournament bubble with a three-game winning streak over Illinois, Minnesota and Ohio State, and they appeared to be well on their way to recording a fourth straight win on Sunday. The Nittany Lions blew a 19-point lead in the second half against Rutgers, falling in a 59-56 final. They missed their final 14 shots of the game and made just 8 of 29 attempts from 3-point range. Penn State is now in a predicament heading down the stretch, as it is currently listed among the “next four out” in the latest bracketology projections from ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.

The Nittany Lions have relied on their offense to win games this year, ranked No. 14 in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency ratings. They have the lowest turnover rate in college basketball and have the ninth-best effective field goal percentage (55.9). Penn State’s offensive rebounding percentage is the worst in the country, though, as the Nittany Lions do not crash the glass. They are facing a Northwestern defense that is No. 25 in adjusted efficiency. Senior guard Jalen Pickett leads Penn State with 18.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game. The Nittany Lions have the most experienced roster in college basketball.
