Ottawa comes in off a 5-1 home victory over Buffalo in their previous contest Sunday night to finish 2023 on a positive note. Vancouver has been off since falling 4-1 to Philadelphia at home in their previous game Thursday night. Ottawa won for the third time in four games as they shut down Buffalo at home Sunday night to finish 2023 on a positive note. The Senators improved to 14-18-0 on the season and were eighth in the Atlantic Division standings, 22 points behind the Bruins for the division lead. They were 13 points behind Toronto and Tampa Bay, who are tied for the final guaranteed spot in the Atlantic Division. They are 13 points behind the Lightning for the second wild card spot. Ottawa is 9th in offense as they average 3.44 goals per game to this point of the season. The Senators are 28th in goals against as they allow an average of 3.50 goals per contest this year. Ottawa is 23rd with the man advantage as they have cashed in 17.6% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Senators are 32nd in penalty killing as they successfully navigate 72.1% of their shorthanded situations this season.

Against Buffalo, Ottawa took advantage of a Sabres team playing the second game of a back-to-back and rolled to the victory. The Senators held an 18-12 edge in shots on goal in the opening period and took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room at the first intermission. Jakob Chychrun opened the scoring with his seventh goal of the season, on the power play, at 6:51 off assists from Claude Giroux and Jake Sanderson. Zack MacEwen made it a 2-0 game with his first goal of the year at 12:38 off assists from Jacob Bernard-Docker and Thomas Chabot. They gave up a goal in the final minute of the period to narrow their lead. In the second period, Ottawa was outshot 18-5 but outscored Buffalo 2-0 to take a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes of action. Dominik Kubalik made it a 3-1 game with his eighth of the season at 7:18 off assists from Ridly Greig and Chabot. Mark Kastelic extended to a 4-1 lead with his first of the year at 19:44 off an assist from Erik Brannstrom. In th e third period, Ottawa was outshot 16-8 but tallied the lone goal of the period to close out the win. Artem Zub finished the scoring with an empty net goal for his third of the season, unassisted, at 15:16 to seal things up for the Senators. Anton Forsberg made 45 saves for the Senators, who were outshot 46-31, in the win. Joonas Korpisalo is expected to be in goal for the Senators in this contest.
