The Ottawa Senators are on the road as they make the trip to face the New Jersey Devils Thursday night. Ottawa comes in off a 6-4 home loss to Vancouver in their previous contest Tuesday night. New Jersey picked up a 3-2 home victory over Calgary Tuesday night in their most recent game. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Senators own a 6-2-2 advantage and have won the last three meetings. Ottawa struggled in the third period against Vancouver as they dropped their sixth straight game Tuesday night. The Senators entered Wednesday 4-8-0 on the season and in the basement of the Atlantic Division standings, 14 points behind the Bruins for the division lead. Ottawa is tied for 10th in offense as they average 3.50 goals per game on the season. The Senators are tied for 26th in goals against as they allow an average of 3.67 goals per contest this year. Ottawa is 17th with the man advantage as they have cashed in 20.9% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Senators are tied for 15th in penalty killing as they successfully navigate 78.7% of their shorthanded situations this season.

Against the Canucks, the Senators wilted in the third period, negating another strong offensive performance, extending their recent struggles. The open ing period saw the Senators hold a 16-8 edge in shots on goal but they skated to the dressing room leading only 2-1 after 20 minutes of play. Drake Batherson opened the scoring with his fourth of the season 50 seconds into the game off assists from Alex DeBrincat and Jacob Bernard-Docker. After Vancouver tied the game, Travis Hamonic gave the Senators a 2-1 lead with his first goal of the year at 19:23 off an assist from Tim Stutzle. In the second period, Ottawa held a 19-8 edge in shots but they were outscored 1-0 to leave the game even at the second intermission. The third period saw the Senators outshot 12-6 and outscored 4-2 to take the loss. After giving up a pair of goals to trail 4-2, Stutzle scored his fourth of the season, on the power play, at 14:03 off an assist from DeBrincat to make it a one-goal game. The Senators allowed a goal only 56 seconds later to restore their two-goal deficit. Claude Giroux drew Ottawa within a goal again at 5-4 with his seventh goal of the sea son, on the power play, at 17:09 off an assist from Jake Sanderson. The Senators couldn’t score again, giving up an empty net goal to close things out. Cam Talbot made 22 saves for Ottawa, who held a 41-28 edge in shots on goal, in the loss. Anton Forsberg is expected to get the start in goal for this contest.
