The Oklahoma Sooners took care of business in anticipation of their biggest game of the season with a 50-20 win over Iowa State last Saturday night. The Sooners avoided the dreaded trap game with a convincing win over an Iowa State team that has beaten them twice in the past six seasons. The win improves them to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Big 12 as they get set for Texas in Dallas this Saturday.
“If we want to have the kind of season that we want … you got to get to 5-0,” Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said. ” And this is about improving and being relentless to improve. Got to get better. We're not a championship team right now, but this was another step in trying to get there.”
Quarterback Dillon Gabriel continued his brilliant season by totaling five touchdowns in the game, three through the air and two on the ground. He finished with 366 yards passing in the game on 26-39 passing. He did throw one interception in the victory. In all, the Sooner racked up 523 yards of total offense in the game including 30 first downs.
The aggressive Sooners' defense finished with nine tackles for loss including three sacks in the win. They held Iowa State to 352 yards of total offense and shut them out in the second half of the game. Oklahoma also had two interceptions in the game.
The Sooners come into this huge showdown with Texas with perhaps one of their most complete teams in recent years. Offensively, Oklahoma ranks sixth in total offense thus far through five games. They have the 56th ranked rushing attack in the nation and, more impressively, the 8th best passing attack. Oklahoma is ranked 39th in red zone scoring this season. On the defensive end, the Sooners are ranked 24th in the nation as Venables continues to build a defense that fits his style from his days as defensive coordinator during Clems on's National Title years. They are ranked 24th in the nation in total defense. The Sooners are 29th against the rush and 37th against the pass. They are also ranked a solid 28th in the country in red zone defense.
The Sooners, despite the amount of times they put the ball in the air, are seventh in the country in turnover differential. They will have to be better mentally on Saturday against the Longhorns, however, ranking just 98th in the country in penalties per game.
