Ohio State vs. Michigan State Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 10-8-2022

The 3rd ranked Ohio State Buckeyes take their 5-0 record to the road for the first time this season when they travel to East Lansing to take on the 2-3 Michigan State Spartans. The Buckeyes demolished the Spartans in Columbus last season, 56-7, with both teams ranked in the top ten at the time. The two teams seem to be going in opposite directions this season but the Spartans have an opportunity to turn things around with an upset of Ohio State. The opening kick is set for 4:00pm EST.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have jumped out of the gates this season at 5-0 and left little doubt in the five wins with a combined score of 244-74. Last Saturday, the Buckeyes moved to 2-0 in the Big Ten with a 49-10 thrashing of Rutgers at home. Running back Miyan Williams tied a Buckeyes' team record with five touchdowns in the game as part of his 189 yards rushing in the one-sided victory over the Scarlett Knights.

“Miyan was running hard today,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said in his postgame presser. “You know, he turns a 3-yard run into a 5-yard. He just keeps us on schedule. And it was tough down there in the red zone. (Rutgers) kind of dug in a few times. Miyan had a really good day for us.”

Quarterback C.J. Stroud took a backseat to the Buckeyes ground attack on Saturday. The Heisman-hopeful completed 13-of-24 pass for 154 yards. The 154 yards passing represen ts a career-low for Stroud. He threw two touchdowns passes on the day, one to Julian Fleming and the other to Marvin Harrison Jr. Ohio State had 413 total yards of offense including 252 on the ground. They committed two turnovers on the day, one interception and one fumble.

The Buckeyes' defense held Rutgers to just 1-of-11 on third down conversions and 11 first downs on the day. Ohio State's defense forced two turnovers on the day as well, one fumble and an interception. They had one sack on the day and six tackles for loss.

As per usual, the Buckeyes offense led by Stroud is humming along. Ohio State has the #1 scoring offense in the country thus far. On the ground, Ohio State is ranked 11th in the country and the team is ranked 17th in passing. As the third ranked team in the country, Ohio State's defense has also been sharp. They rank 11th in scoring defense this season and are ranked 26th against the run and 7th against the pass. Finally, Ohio State is ranked 54th in the country in turnover differential.

Key Injuries: Running back  TreVeyon Henderson, who missed the Rutgers game, was a full go in practice this week so he should again split carries with Williams. The secondary, which has been banged up, looks to be a full go with safeties Tanner McCalister and Jantzen Dunn along with cornerbacks Denzel Burke and Came Brown all practiced this week.
