Oakland salvaged the finale of a three-game series at home with the Rangers as they prevailed 2-0 Wednesday afternoon. Washington closed a four-game road set with Philadelphia Thursday evening hoping for a split. The Nationals were blanked 7-0 in the third game of the series Wednesday night. Last season, the Nationals took two of three at home in the most recent series August 30-September 2, 2022.

Oakland snapped a two-game slide as they took the finale of a three-game home series with the AL West-leading Rangers at home Wednesday. The A’s entered Thursday 33-82 on the year and were in the basement of the AL West, 35 games behind Texas for the top spot. They were 31.5 games behind the Blue Jays for the final wild card spot in the American League playoff picture. On Wednesday, Oakland finished with seven hits with Jordan Diaz the lone player with two in the game. Zach Gelof hit his sixth homer of the season in the victory for the A’s. Austin Pruitt didn’t factor in the decision as he threw two innings, allowing no runs on no hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Freddy Tarnok (1-1) earned the win in relief with four scoreless frames, allowing two hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Trevor May allowed a pair of hits in a scoreless ninth, striking out one, for his 12th save.

Paul Blackburn takes the hill for his 13th appearance and 12th start of the season for the A’s in this contest. He comes in 2-2 with a 4.35 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, 21 walks and 63 strikeouts over 60 innings of work this season. Blackburn didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came against the Giants at home Saturday. He threw six innings, allowing no runs on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in an eventual 2-1 A’s victory. In his last three starts, Blackburn is 1-0 with a 1.56 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP, six walks and 19 strikeouts over 17.3 innings of work. Blackburn, in his 64th career appearance and 60th major league start, pitches against the Nationals for the first time here. As a result, this marks his first career start at Nationals Park as well.
