Oakland Athletics vs. Chicago White Sox Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 7-29-2022

The Chicago White Sox play host to the Oakland Athletics on Friday night in the opener of their weekend series from Guaranteed Rate Field. There hasn't been too much in the way of positivity to report back from the Athletics, as they sit with one of the worst records in baseball and haven't shown signs of life in weeks. For the White Sox, the AL Central remains well within reach, and grabbing some wins this weekend is key. These two have yet to meet this season and after winning four of seven last season, they'll be looking to pick up where they left off.

The Athletics have been one of baseball's worst teams throughout much of the season but have found a way to turn things on of late. They've gone 7-3 in their last ten games and actually have a better road record than home record, making it seem like they have a chance in this one. Having to travel to Chicago is never easy, especially as they take on an opponent who knows how valuable getting the win is in this one. For the Athletics, it comes down to their young talent, making it no surprise that they've been consistent as a team this season. While it'll be a challenge to grab the win, there's no reason this team can't pull off the upset.

Injuries have certainly helped this team grow of late but they do remain without Jed Lowrie (shoulder), a catalyst in the lineup. Add that to four relievers being out as well, and they'll be needing a strong game from their start in this one.

According to MLB.com, James Kaprielian will get the start on Friday night as the Athletics to look to continue their strong run. The righty has struggled this season though, coming into this one with a 1-5 record and 4.74 ERA. He is coming off of a five-inning shutout performance the last time out and hasn't allowed more than three runs since June 15th, giving hope that he can be strong in this one.

For as decent as the pitching might be at times, the offense continues to let this group down. The Athletics ranking last in baseball in average and OPS, while ranking 29th in runs scored per nine innings. Their strikeout rate lowering has helped but it hasn't been enough to overcome the other woes. Sean Murphy (.244 average) leads the way but without much power in the middle of the lineup, it could be too much to ask of this group to keep pace with the White Sox on Friday.
