NFL preseason: Situational records for every team
NFL preseason: Situational records for every team

While many of us at VSiN are putting the final touches on our 2022 NFL Betting Guide, due out in two weeks, a three-week schedule of exhibition football is in front of us, beginning with two games Thursday night.

Naturally, the scope of NFL betting changes from the preseason to the regular season, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t opportunities over the next three weeks. In fact, I know some professional bettors who believe the chances of cashing in on preseason games is better than during the regular season. Of course, there are others who don’t touch these games.

In any case, there’s no need to pay attention to anything regular-season related when you handicap the preseason. In fact, I keep an entirely separate database and set of strength ratings for these games. The strength ratings in this report are based entirely on my analysis of each team’s preseason performance.

The 2020 preseason was canceled due to COVID-19, but last year most teams played three games and the same holds true this year. The change in 2021 from four games to three was huge because it changed the routine for how teams prepare in August. Last year we saw very few stars, quarterbacks in particular, even take a preseason snap. In the past, with a four-game schedule, coaches typically ramped up their starters’ playing time in each of the first three games, culminating with the so-called dress rehearsal in Week 3. Week 4 was for evaluating the lower-end talent on the roster ahead of final cuts, and key players usually didn’t see the field. With the three-game slate, it seems that only players in position battles are being looked at extensively.

Perhaps the single most important concept you’ll want to consider is that some coaches use these games to establish momentum or a winning culture. Others couldn’t care less and just want to avoid key injuries. For instance, the Ravens under John Harbaugh have easily been the league’s best preseason team, and you’ll see below that they own a spectacular 20-0 record since 2016, going 18-1-1 ATS. The Browns, and more recently the Bills, have also turned it on in August. On the other hand, the Falcons have become known for essentially tanking the preseason in favor of keeping players healthy. The Lions share a similar philosophy.

The other important factor, which typically has a huge impact on closing lines, is whether or not a starting quarterback is going to play. If a spread looks off, or falls outside the + 3 to -3 line range, it’s a good bet that one of the QBs is not suiting up. Looking at last year’s schedule, there were only six out of 48 games in which I did not make a ratings adjustment due to a quarterback sitting out.

I will be posting weekly game ratings for every matchup over the next three weeks, both at VSiN.com and in Point Spread Weekly. Again, these ratings are all exclusively based on preseason analysis.

Here’s a look at some of the more notable head-to-head trends to consider over the next three weeks:

— Week 1, New England at N.Y. Giants: Underdogs are on a 5-0 ATS run

— Week 1, Philadelphia at N.Y. Jets: Home teams are on 7-1 ATS run (lost last year)

— Week 1, Miami at Tampa Bay: Road teams and underdogs are on a 4-0 ATS run

— Week 2, Carolina at New England: Last five meetings have gone Under the total

— Week 3, Green Bay at Kansas City: Favorites are on a 5-0 SU and ATS run

— Week 3, Buffalo at Carolina: Last four meetings went Over the total

— Week 3, Washington at Baltimore: Ravens are on a 4-0 SU and ATS run (19.8 average margin of victory)

— Week 3, N.Y. Giants at N.Y. Jets: Designated road team is on a 10-1 ATS run

Before you dig into the team-by-team previews, pay special attention to some of these preseason trends:

— Atlanta is on a 1-15 ATS slide versus AFC teams

— Buffalo has won its last eight games, averaging 25.8 PPG

— Chicago is on a 10-3 ATS run as an underdog

— Cleveland totals are on a 19-3-1 Under run

— Green Bay is on a 9-1 ATS run as a favorite

— Indianapolis is 8-2 SU and 8-0-2 ATS in its last 10 games as an underdog

— Minnesota is on a 9-4 SU and 10-3 ATS run in road games

— N.Y. Giants are on a 16-4 ATS run as underdogs

— Tampa Bay is 4-12 SU and 3-13 ATS at home versus 9-6 SU and 10-5 ATS on the road since 2013
