New York Yankees vs. St. Louis Cardinals Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 8-7-2022

The New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals wrap up their 3-game series in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon. The finale of this matchup of two classic major league teams will be a good one as the Yankees send newly acquired right-hander Frankie Montas (4-9, 3.18) to the mound to take on Cardinals veteran ace Adam Wainwright (8-8, 3.11). First pitch is set for 215pm EST.

The Yankees have hit their first rough patch of an otherwise flawless season as injuries begin to pile up. In the past week, the Yankees have sent three different pitchers to the 60-day IL including starter Luis Severino and valuable reliever Michael King. In addition, the Yankees remain without all-star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton as he recovers from an achilles issue. On Friday night, the Yankees lost 4-3 as closer Clay Holmes blew his second save in two weeks allowing two hits and two runs to score in the 8th inning of a 4-3 Cardinals win. On Saturday night, the Yankees were held to just two hits an were upended 1-0 for their 4th-straight loss and second in a row to the Cardinals.

The decision to trade starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery at the trade deadline was a curious one in that the team just played Severino on the 60-day IL. The Yankees are rather thin in the starting rotation behind team workhorses Gerit Cole, Nestor Cortes and James Taillon. On Sunday, the Yankees will get their first-look at what they hope will be a major upgrade in their starting rotation, Frankie Montas. Montas has won just three of his nine starts this season for the porous Oakland A's but is also coming off an injury-filled month of August that saw him make just three starts.
