The Yankees entered Monday 50-44 on the year and were tied for fourth in the AL East, nine games behind the Rays for the top spot. They stood two games behind the Astros for the final wild card spot in the American League. On Sunday, Gleyber Torres (run) and Oswaldo Cabrera (run, RBI) each had two hits to lead the Yankees offensively. The team went three of 13 with runners in scoring position in the loss. They wasted a stellar outing from Gerrit Cole, who didn’t factor in the decision after allowing one run on two hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts over six innings. Ron Marinaccio (4-5) took the loss in relief as he allowed one run on one hit with no walks or strikeouts without retiring a hitter.
Domingo German takes the ball for the Yankees here as he logs his 18th start of the season hoping to get on track. German didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came against the Cubs on the road back on July 9. German makes his fifth career appearance and third start against the Angels in this contest. He comes in 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA, a 1.143 WHIP, seven walks and 12 strikeouts over 14 innings of work against them. German earned the win in his lone career start at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, which came on April 23, 2019. In that outing, he threw 6.2 inn ings, allowing one run (none earned) on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts in an eventual 7-5 Yankees win.
