The Boston Red Sox play host to the New York Yankees in an AL East rivalry showdown on Wednesday night from Fenway Park. The Red Sox enter this one two games clear of the Yankees and while the AL East race seems out of reach for both these sides, a strong run could get them within striking distance in the Wild Card races. Boston had won seven in a row in this series heading into this mid-week series, along with 8-2 in the last ten meetings overall. Expect this to be a great matchup but the Yankees will need to find a way to show that they can compete before some might believe in them.

The Yankees have struggled after back-to-back strong seasons and after many fans thought they'd eventually make a push towards the top of the standings, time is quickly running out. They sit in last place in the AL East and struggles in the toughest division in baseball, haven't made things easier for them. They are 6-4 in their last ten games overall, which might be a sign of things getting better, though the struggles against Boston are well-noted of late. Only two wins in the last ten meetings, including getting swept at Fenway Park back in June, could have their confidence shaken coming into this one.

According to MLB.com, Clarke Schmidt will get the ball for the Yankees in this one, as the righty looks to secure the rivalry win. He enters with a 9-8 record and 4.54 ERA and was solid in his last start against Boston. In that one, he went 5.2 innings, allowing four hits and two run s, as he looks to replicate that in this rematch.

New York's offense has struggled this season, only averaging 4.3 runs per game, a stark contrast compared to how solid they have been in previous years. They are also only hitting .223 as a team, though they seem to be hit or miss in line with how the power numbers go. Giancarlo Stanton (rest) is questionable for this one, while Anthony Rozzi (concussion) continues to miss time. Having Aaron Judge (31 home runs) back in the lineup has been a nice change of pace but without much help, it could be a challenge to keep pace with Boston.
