New York got off to a slow start after the All-Star break, losing a pair of games against San Diego to open the second half of the season. The Mets have found their top form again since then, rattling off a seven-game winning streak immediately following those two losses. They swept a two-game series against the Yankees before sweeping Miami in a three-game series last weekend. New York will be wrapping up its six-game road trip on Wednesday. The Mets are in first place in the National League East, leading Atlanta by 3.5 games. They are also 10 games ahead of Philadelphia, so it is shaping up to be a two-team race down the stretch.

The Mets are an outstanding offensive team, ranked fifth in the MLB in batting average (.257). First baseman Pete Alonso has 105 hits, including 27 home runs. Right fielder Starling Marte and shortstop Francisco Lindor have both eclipsed 100 base knocks as well. They will be facing a Washington pitching staff that is dead-last in the majors with an ERA of 5.16. Right-handed pitcher Chris Bassitt is expected to start for New York on Wednesday. He allowed four earned runs on six hits and four walks against Miami in his last start. Bassitt has been going deep in almost all of his outings, pitching at least six frames in seven consecutive appearances.
