The National League East fourth place New York Mets (64-75, 4th NL East) visit Target Field on Saturday for the second game of a three-game interleague series versus the American League Central leading Minnesota Twins (73-67, 1st AL Central). New York was defeated by the Washington Nationals 3-2 on Wednesday. New York has won four of its last six, but trails by 27 games in the NL East and is 8 games behind the third and final NL wildcard qualifying spot. Minnesota lost to the Cleveland Guardians 2-1 on Wednesday but the Twins have won four of the last six and lead Cleveland by 6 ½ games at the top of the AL Central. New York will play without six pitchers as well as position players Luis Guillorme and Starling Marte. Minnesota will play without 6 pitchers as well as position players Byron Buxton, Nick Gordon, Alex Kirilloff, Jose Miranda and Michael A. Taylor.

The New York Mets, with the exception of slugger Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor, have struggled at the plate the entire season. The Mets have scored the 20th most runs with an average of 4.39 runs per game. New York’s team batting average is just 24th in a 30-team league and its on base percentage and slugging percentage are both just 18th. Alonso has 15 doubles, two triples and team bests in both home runs with 42 and RBI with 102. Lindor leads the Mets in doubles with 30, has two triples, and is second best in both home runs with 26 and RBI with 83.

 

New York's pitching staff also needs Improvement as the Mets are only 18th in team ERA with 4.43. New York is 18th in batting average allowed and 21st in WHIP. The starting rotation has 48 Quality Starts which is 14th in baseball. Kodai Senga is leading New Yor k in both wins with 10 and strikeouts with 176. New York will hand the ball on Saturday to David Peterson. This season the left-hander is 3-7 with an ERA of 5.40 and 95 strikeouts.
