New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-1-2023

New York will try to bounce back from a 2-1 loss to Miami when the teams square off for the third game of a four-game series on Saturday afternoon. The Mets picked up a 5-3 win with a pair of late runs on Opening Day, but Miami was able to level the series on Friday night. New York did not get a run across the plate until a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning.

New York got off to a fast start this season with Thursday’s 5-3 win, as Brandon Nimmo doubled in a pair of runs in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie. Right fielder Starling Marte and second baseman Jeff McNeil each had two hits in that win. Their offense went cold for most of Friday night’s game, though, outside of Marte having another two-hit game. New York finished with just four total hits, and its lone run came on a solo home run by first baseman Pete Alonso in the top of the ninth inning. The Mets ranked second in the majors in team batting average (.259) last season.

Right-handed starting pitcher Tylor Megill is going to start for New York on Saturday afternoon. Justin Verlander was originally scheduled to take the mound for the Mets, but he is headed to the 15-day injured list with a shoulder injury, so they are recalling Megill instead. He had been optioned to Triple-A before the end of spring training after posting a 5.13 ERA across 47.1 MLB innings last season. Megill had more walks (13) than strikeouts (12) in 17 innings in the Grapefruit League, which is what ultimately led to David Peterson earning the final spot in the rotation.
