New York Mets vs. Detroit Tigers Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 5-3-2023

The Detroit Tigers (10-17) will host the New York Mets on Wednesday in the sandwich game of a three game series. Tuesday's contests saw the start time delayed due to weather, and was not complete at the time of this preview.

After going 101-61 last season and losing to the Padres 2 games to 1 in the NLWCS, the Mets have high hopes for 2023. The starting rotation is expected to be led by two former Detroit Tigers, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander. Scherzer (2-1, 3.72 ERA) is scheduled to start Wednesday, with Verlander making his Mets regular-season debut on Thursday. Scherzer will be making his first start since tossing three scoreless innings against the Dodgers on April 19, which led to an ejection and 10-game suspension for having a foreign substance on his hand.

Weather issues have been typical for the Mets recently. They had a game against Atlanta called after five innings last Friday and then postponed games on Saturday and Sunday, which led to a double-headed that they split with the Braves on Monday.

The Mets offense has been in the middle of the pack, racking 11th in runs scored, 15th in OPS, 18th in batting average, and 19th in home runs. The bullpen is 11th with a 3.51 ERA.
