New York entered Tuesday losers of five of their previous six games as they were drubbed by the Rockies at home Sunday afternoon. The Mets entered Tuesday 17-18 on the season and stood a distant second in the NL East, seven games behind the Braves for the top spot in the division. On Sunday, New York got three hits from Jeff McNeil (run, two RBI) while Luis Guillorme (RBI) added a pair in the loss. Dan Vogelbach (his second) homered in the loss for the Mets. Joey Lucchesi didn’t factor in the decision as he threw four innings, allowing three runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Jimmy Yacabonis (2-1) took the loss in relief as he allowed five runs on three hits with two walks and no strikeouts in one-third of an inning.
Justin Verlander is on the mound for the Mets as he makes his second start of the season after missing the start of the year with a teres major strain. He is 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, one walk and five strikeouts on the year. Verlander took the loss in his season debut, which came against the Tigers on the road Thursday. He threw five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts in a game the Mets dropped by a 2-0 score. This marks his third career start against the Reds in this contest. He has a 0-1 record with a 4.15 ERA, a 1.231 WHIP, four walks and 17 strikeouts over 13 innings of work against them. Both of Verlander’s career starts against the Reds have come at the Great American Ball Park, giving him at least a little familiarity with the park.
