It’s an interconference matchup between a pair of teams looking to make up some ground in their respective playoff pictures down in Buzz City. The New Orleans Pelicans are on the road as they travel to face the Charlotte Hornets Friday night. New Orleans comes in off a 142-122 road win over Washington in their previous contest Wednesday night, covering the line as a seven-point favorite. Charlotte fell 115-104 on the road by Miami as they were swept in a home-and-home set with the loss Wednesday night, failing to cover the line as an eight-point underdog. In the all-time regular season series between the teams, the Pelicans own a 25-12 advantage and have won the last two meetings. That includes a 115-96 home win in the most recent matchup on March 23, 2023.

New Orleans won their second straight game as they took down Washington with a high-octane offensive attack on the road Wednesday night. The Pelicans entered Thursday 14-11 on the season and stood tied for second in the Southwest Division, two games behind the Mavericks for the top spot. They were ninth in the Western Conference playoff picture, 4.5 games behind the Timberwolves for the top spot, half a game behind the Kings for the final guaranteed spot and three games clear of the 11th-place Warriors to remain in the play-in tournament field. Against Washington, New Orleans trailed by as many as 15 in the opening quarter but cut the margin to two after the first 12 minutes. The Pelicans regrouped to lead by 11 at the half and didn’t let Washington closer than six the rest of the way to earn the win. New Orleans shot 52.1% from the field, including 16 of 34 from three-point range, and controlled the glass by a 46-33 margi n to offset allowing Washington to shoot 51.2% in the game. Brandon Ingram led the Pelicans with a season-high 40 points in the win.

On the season, the Pelicans are 13th in the league in scoring offense as they average 114.9 points per game on the season. New Orleans is 15th in rebounding by collecting 44.2 boards a night while the team ranks 11th in assists by dishing out 26.2 dimes a night. The Pelicans are 18th in the league in scoring defense as they allow 114.2 points per game so far this year. Brandon Ingram puts up 23.6 points plus 5.3 assists per contest this season while Zion Williamson adds 22.9 points plus 5.6 rebounds a night. CJ McCollum (20 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.5 assists), Jonas Valanciunas (14 points, 9.4 rebounds) and Jordan Hawkins (11.5 points) are solid secondary scoring options. Herbert Jones (11.8 points), Najj Marshall, Matt Ryan (9.3 points), Dyson Daniels, Kira Lewis Jr., Trey Murphy (17 points), Jose Alvarado, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Larry Nance Jr. and Cody Zeller are key pieces in the Pelicans’ rotation. New Orleans is 10th in field goal percentage by shooting 47.7% from the field as a team this season. The Pelicans are 27th in the league in threes per game as they knock down 11 triples per contest and stand 20th in three-point shooting by hitting 35.7% percent from beyond the arc.

Ryan (elbow) is expected to be out until mid-February after surgery while Nance Jr. (ribs) is slated to be out until mid-January. Williamson (ankle) missed Wednesday’s game against the Wizards and is questionable here. Watch for updates regarding his status leading to tip-off.
