It’s an interconference matchup on the ice as a pair of teams searching for two points do battle in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The New Jersey Devils are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Minnesota Wild Thursday night. These teams squared off on Sunday afternoon in New Jersey with the Devils picking up a 4-3 victory in the front half of what is essentially a home-and-home set. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Wild own a commanding 7-1-2 advantage. The Devils win in the game Sunday snapped Minnesota’s five-game win streak in the series. Can the Devils sweep the two-game season series or will the Wild bounce back and earn a split?

New Jersey won their second straight and fourth in the last five games as they beat the Wild at home Sunday afternoon in their previous contest. The Devils improved to 5-2-1 on the season and stand third, three points behind the Rangers for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division standings. On the year, New Jersey is 2nd in scoring as they average 4.13 goals per game on the season. The Devils are 27th in goals against as they allow 3.63 goals per contest. New Jersey is 1st in power play success as they have cashed in 42.4% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Devils are tied for 21st in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 75% of their shorthanded situations on the season.

Against Minnesota, New Jersey’s high-octane offense was in full gear again and that helped them skate away with two points on home ice. The Devils were outshot 10-9 in the opening period of play but skated off tied at one at the first intermission. Jesper Bratt opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season at 6:13 off assists from John Marino and Kevin Bahl. The Devils gave up the tying goal later in the period. In the second period, New Jersey was outshot 17-10 but outscored Minnesota 3-1 to take a 4-2 lead to the dressing room at the second intermission. After giving up a goal to trail 2-1, Tyler Toffoli tied the game with his second goal of the year, on the power play, at 6:10 off assists from Bratt and Luke Hughes. Just 44 seconds later, Erik Haula gave New Jersey a 3-2 lead with his fifth goal of the year, unassisted, at the 6:54 mark. Bratt tallied his second goal of the game and sixth of the year at 16:39 off assists from Timo Meier and Luke Hughes for a 4-2 lead. That marker also came on the power play. In the third period, New Jersey held an 11-7 edge in shots on goal but was outscored 1-0, though they m anaged to hang on for the victory. Vitek Vanacek made 31 saves for the Devils, who were outshot 34-30, in the victory. He’s expected to be between the pipes for this contest as well.
