The New England Patriots had won two-straight games with rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe heading into Monday night's matchup with the Bears. Head coach Bill Belichick kept his quarterback choice a mystery all week as starter Mac Jones looked to be ready from a high ankle sprain. Jones did get the start but struggled through a 3-of-6 start with an interception. Zappe came in and led the Patriots on two touchdown drives to cut the lead to 20-14 at the half. Zappe struggled in the second half and the Patriots defense could not stop the Bears offense all night. They allowed 24 first downs and 243 yards rushing in the 33-14 defeat. Chicago outscored New England 13-0 in the second half and the Patriots had four turnovers to just one for the Bears.

“It's obviously a poor performance tonight. We were badly out-coached, out-played. Just didn't do anything well enough in the game to have a chance to win or deserve t o win. The Bears did a good job. Totally controlled the game in all three phases. Well, we have obviously a lot of work to do here and need to perform a lot better than that. Need to compete better than that and perform better than that. It's not any one thing. Just collectively it's all of us, and we just have to all perform better. Simple as that. That's where we're at. It's not about any one player or one coach, one thing. Just collectively we've got to perform better, so that's what we'll work toward doing this week.” Belichick said in his postgame presser.

The Patriots' early season issues resurfaced against the Bears as they struggled with their red zone defense, penalties and turnovers. On the season, New England has the 16th ranked scoring offense. They are 12th best ground attack in the league, 21st best passing attack and have been terrible in the red zone, ranking just 26th in the league. The turnover bug resurfaced and New England is now 21st in turnover differential. They have the 14th best scoring defense, are 25th against the run and 12th against the pass. The Pats red zone defense is ranked just 16th in the NFL.
