Week 17 of the NFL schedule brings us a matchup between a pair of AFC East rivals on the gridiron as they collide in Western New York. The New England Patriots are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Buffalo Bills Sunday afternoon. New England stunned Denver 26-23 on the road last Sunday night in their previous contest, winning outright as a seven-point underdog. Buffalo knocked off the Chargers 24-22 on the road in their previous contest last Saturday, though they failed to cover the line as a 13-point favorite. In the all-time regular season series, the Patriots own a 77-48-1 advantage, including a 29-25 home win in the first meeting this season on October 22.

New England won for the second time in their last three games as they shocked Denver on the road last Sunday night. The Patriots improved to 4-11 on the season but have been eliminated from playoff contention as they have the worst record in the AFC. Against Denver, New England used a big third quarter to take the lead but needed a last-second kick to earn the win after letting it slip away. The Patriots trailed 7-0 after the opening quarter and 7-3 at the half before scoring 20 unanswered points in the third quarter to go up 23-7. After the Broncos tied the game at 23, New England went 43 yards in seven plays, capped by Chad Ryland’s 56-yard field goal with two seconds to play, to earn the win. The Patriots held a 289-276 edge in total offense and forced two turnovers, including a scoop-six, while committing one in the game. Those numbers overshadowed that they lost the first down battle 19-12 and the time of possession by a 31:18 t o 28:42 margin in the contest.

The Patriots enter week 17 ranked 24th in the league in passing offense as they average 189.8 yards per game through the air. New England is 25th in the league in rushing offense with an average of 95.7 yards per contest on the ground. The Patriots are 32nd in the league in scoring offense as they put up an average of 14.1 points per game. New England is 16th in scoring defense as they allow 21.5 points per contest. Mac Jones is 224 of 325 passing for 2,120 yards with 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions on the year. He is third on the team in rushing with 96 yards on the ground. Bailey Zappe is 99 of 156 for 975 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions this season. Rhamondre Stevenson leads the team on the ground with 156 carries for 619 yards and four scores this season. Ezekiel Elliott (157 carries, 549 yards, two TD) is the second back in the system for the Patriots. Kendrick Bourne is fifth on the team in the passing game with 37 receptions for 406 yards and four scores this season. Chad Ryland is 21 of 22 on extra point attempts but is only 15 of 23 on field goal attempts with a long of 56 this season.

The Patriots had a fairly lengthy injury report with the second released report Thursday. Tackle Trent Brown (illness) along with safeties Jabrill Peppers (hamstring) and Jalen Mills (concussion) all did not practice Wednesday or Thursday.
