A pair of Eastern Conference teams off to strong starts take the ice north of the border looking to pick up two points in the standings. The New York Rangers are on the road as they travel to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs Tuesday night. New York edged Boston 2-1 in overtime on Saturday night on the road in the second game of a back-to-back situation in their previous contest. Toronto walloped Pittsburgh 7-0 at home on Saturday night in their previous contest. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Maple Leafs own a 5-3-2 advantage and have taken the last three meetings. That includes a 7-3 road win at Madison Square Garden in the first meeting this season December 12.

New York won for the third time in four games as they edged the Bruins in overtime on the road Saturday night in the second game of a back-to-back set. The Rangers entered Monday 21-7-1 on the year and held a six-point lead over Philadelphia for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division. New York entered Monday tied for 12th in the league with an average of 3.28 goals per game. The Rangers are eighth by allowing 2.72 goals per game this season. New York is third when it comes to success with the man advantage as they have converted 29.8% of their power play opportunities this season. The Rangers are 6th in the league by successfully navigating 85.3% of their shorthanded situations on the season.

Against the Bruins, it took extra time but the Rangers managed to emerge with the victory on the road Saturday night. In the opening period of play, New York held an 8-5 advantage in sh ots on goal with neither side denting the twine, keeping the game scoreless after 20 minutes of play. The second period saw the Rangers hold an 11-10 shot advantage though they gave up the lone goal of the period to trail 1-0 at the second intermission. In the third period, New York held a 14-7 advantage in shots on goal and tallied the lone goal to tie things up and force overtime. Vincent Trocheck knotted things up with his seventh goal of the season, on the power play, at 10:50 off assists from Mike Zibanejad and Adam Fox. In overtime, New York held a 1-0 edge in shots on goal and found the back of the net to earn the win. Trocheck netted his second of the game and eighth of the season at 2:03 of the extra session to score the game-winner off assists from Artemi Panarin and Erik Gustafsson. Igor Shesterkin made 21 saves for the Rangers, who held a 34-21 edge in shots on goal, in the win. He’s likely to be between the pipes again for this contest.
