The New York Islanders face the Toronto Maple Leafs with both teams looking to improve in the Eastern Conference. The Islanders have a 20-17-12 record and with only two wins in their last 10 games, they have stumbled into fourth place in the Metropolitan Division. The Maple Leafs have a 25-14-8 record but with three wins in a row, they have leaped into fourth place in the Atlantic Division. The Islanders stumbled into the All-Star break with their offense flailing and scoring only 2.90 goals per game with only seven goals in the last three games. Mathew Barzal, Bo Horvat, and Brock Nelson have scored 54 goals and 80 assists to lead the top two lines but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only five active skaters have scored seven goals or more and opponents can limit the top-heavy offense as a result.

The offense has struggled but the defense has let them down, allowing 3.33 goals per game including 25 goals in the last seven games. Noah Dobson and Alexander Romanov have combined for 6.8 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net with ease. The bright spot has been the play of goaltender Ilya Sorokin who has a .909 save percentage and a 3.17 goals-against average on 1202 shots with 6.9 goals saved above average.
