The New York Islanders face the Edmonton Oilers with both teams looking to improve on rough seasons. The Islanders have a 5-5-3 record and with three losses in a row, they have the second-worst record in the Metropolitan Division. The Oilers have a 3-9-1 record and their slow start has already forced them to replace head coach Jey Woodcroft with Kris Knoblauch. Both teams look to rebound within their divisions and the upcoming game should be a good one as a result.

The Islanders are having a season to forget with their offense struggling, scoring only 2.46 goals per game with only five goals in the last three games. Bo Horvat and Mathew Barzal have scored six goals and 13 assists to lead the top line but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only four skaters have four goals or more and opposing defenses can eliminate the hapless offense as a result.

The offense has let the Islanders down but the defense has also struggled, allowing 3.08 goals per game. Alexander Romanov and Noah Dobson have combined for 1.8 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net at will. The bright spot has been the play of goaltender Ilya Sorokin who has a .907 save percentage and a 3.24 goals-against average on 281 shots with 1.2 goals saved above average.
