The Montreal Canadiens face the Washington Capitals with both teams heading in opposite directions as December comes to a close. The Canadiens have a 15-18-3 record and with losses in a row along with only two wins in their last 10 games, have fallen to the bottom of the Atlantic Division. The Capitals have a 20-13-5 record and with eight wins in their last 10 games have leaped to the top of the Metropolitan Division. Both teams are looking to improve in the Eastern Conference and the upcoming game should be a good one as a result.

The Canadiens are having a rough season with their offense struggling immensely, scoring only 2.61 goals per game with only six goals in the last four games. Nick Suzuki, Kirby Dach, and Cole Caufield have scored 39 goals and 42 assists but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only five skaters have seven goals or more while only six skaters have nine assists or more and opposing defenses can eliminate the hapless offense as a result.

The offense has struggled but the defense has also fallen apart, allowing 3.58 goals per game including 11 goals in the last two games. Johnathan Kovacevic and Arber Xhekaj have combined for 2.6 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net at will. In addition, goaltender Jake Allen has struggled with a .900 save percentage and a 3.29 goals-against average on 790 shots.
