A pair of teams sputtering in the first month of the season take the ice in search of two points in the Gateway City. The Montreal Canadiens are on the road as they make the trip to take on the St. Louis Blues Saturday night. Montreal was on the road against Arizona Thursday night in their previous contest, falling 3-2 for their second straight loss. St. Louis was at home against New Jersey Friday night in the front game of a back-to-back situation. The Blues were dropped 4-1 on the road by Colorado in their previous contest Wednesday night. In the last 10 meetings, the Canadiens have a 6-4 advantage and have won the last three matchups. That includes a 5-4 home win in the most recent tilt on January 7, 2023.

Montreal squared off with an Arizona team that was playing for the second straight night Thursday night. The Canadiens entered Friday night 5-3-2 on the season as they look to gain ground in the Atlantic Division. They stand tied for fourth in the standings, seven points behind Boston for the top spot. Montreal stands 20th in the league in offensive production with 2.90 goals per game on the season. The Canadiens are tied for 16th in goals against as they allow an average of 3.10 goals per contest. Montreal is tied for 14th in the league in power play success by cashing in 20% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Canadiens are 23rd in penalty killing by successfully getting through 75% of their shorthanded situations this season.

Against Arizona, Montreal played tough hockey and hung in the game though they couldn’t generate enou gh offense to earn the victory. The Canadiens held a 12-8 edge in shots in the opening period of play and skated off to the dressing room tied at one after 20 minutes of play. After falling behind 1-0 on a penalty shot goal by Arizona, Sean Monahan tied the game with his sixth goal of the season at 7:13 off an assist from Brendan Gallagher. In the second period, Montreal was outshot by a 19-10 margin and outscored 1-0 to trail 2-1 at the second intermission. The third period saw the shots even at eight and the goals even at one in the stanza, leaving them a goal short on the scoreboard as time expired. Gallagher tied the game with his third goal of the season, on the power play, at 2:59 off assists from Tanner Pearson and Alex Newhook. They gave up the winning goal on the power play less than four minutes later. Jake Allen made 32 saves for the Canadiens, who were outshot 35-30, in the loss. He is expected to get the start in goal for this contest.
