The Montreal Canadiens face the Detroit Red Wings with both teams looking to improve from last season. The Canadiens were the worst team in the NHL last year but have already kicked off the year strong with an opening night win while the Red Wings are hoping to reach the playoffs after coming up short in a disappointment last season. Both teams are looking to start the season out on the right foot and build up a strong record, particularly in the Atlantic Division.

The Canadiens are expected to finish near the bottom of the Eastern Conference but started the season with a big win, scoring four goals in the victory. Cole Caufield, Josh Anderson, and Nick Suzuki scored three goals and two assists to lead the top line but the entire offense looked great. Offseason additions Sean Monahan and Kirby Dach combined for a goal and an assist to add depth to the forward unit while defensemen David Savard and Jordan Harris added two assists from the point to help open up the Canadiens' offense.

While the offense carried the Canadiens the defense struggled, allowing three goals after allowing a league-high 3.87 goals per game last year. David Savard and Kaiden Guhle led the top pairing but the rest of the defense struggled and the young skaters allowed the opposition to skate into the offensive zone at will with the puck. Moreover, goaltender Jake Allen, who is the sta rter this season, struggled on opening night as he allowed three goals on 32 shots.
