It’s an interconference battle on the ice and a revisiting of the old Battle of Quebec when a pair of teams take the ice in the Mile-High City. The Montreal Canadiens are on the road as they make the trip to face the Colorado Avalanche Wednesday night. Montreal comes in off a 3-2 overtime win over Arizona on the road Monday night in their previous contest. Colorado prevailed 1-0 in a shootout at home over the Islanders Monday night in their most recent game. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Avalanche owns a 7-2-1 advantage and claimed the last three meetings. That includes a 3-2 overtime win at home in the most recent matchup on January 22, 2022.

Montreal had dropped three straight and four of five before they managed to take down Arizona in overtime on the road Monday night. The Canadiens entered Tuesday seventh in the Atlantic Division, 20 points behind the Bruins for the top spot and nine back of Tampa Bay for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the division. Montreal stands 27th in the league in offensive production with 2.75 goals per game on the season. The Canadiens are 24th in goals against as they allow an average of 3.50 goals per contest. Montreal is 32nd in the league in power play success by cashing in 13.6% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Canadiens are 16th in penalty killing by successfully getting through 79.3% of their shorthanded situations this season.

Against Arizona, it took extra time but the Canadiens skated away with two points on the road to get ba ck to the .500 mark on the season. The opening period saw Montreal outshot by a 17-5 margin though neither side was able to dent the twine, leaving the game scoreless after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, the Canadiens were outshot 16-12 with each team scoring twice, keeping the game level at two at the second intermission. Cole Caufield opened the scoring with his 19th goal of the season at the 49-second mark off assists from Josh Anderson and Kaiden Guhle. After giving up the tying goal 35 seconds later, Christian Dvorak restored the Canadiens’ one-goal edge with his seventh of the year at 4:27 off assists from Arber Xhekaj and Evgenii Dadonov. The Canadiens allowed the tying goal again less than three minutes later, sending the game to the second intermission tied. In the third period, Montreal held a 7-6 edge in shots on goal with neither team scoring to send the game to extra time. During overtime, the Canadiens held a 2-0 shot advantage and scored t he goal that game them the victory. Mike Hoffman potted the winner with his seventh goal of the season at 1:08 off assists from Kirby Dach and Joel Edmundson to send Montreal off with the victory.
